Helping children turn illness into stories—and stories into books.
Writers Incorporated partners with children and families facing serious illness to write, illustrate, and publish their own books—at no cost to them.
Working with patients at Boston Children’s Hospital and in the community, we transform difficult experiences into opportunities for creativity, reflection, and connection. For some, that means holding a finished book in their hands. For others, it means simply finding the words to express what they’re going through.
In moments when so much feels out of their control, storytelling gives children something powerful back: a voice, a sense of ownership, and a way to shape their own narrative.
Writing isn’t just creative—it’s therapeutic. It can help untangle fear, build confidence, and create meaning out of uncertainty. Through each story, children are able to process their experiences, connect with others, and leave something lasting behind.
“Both of my children have overcome so much. Putting our family’s story into words has been an unforgettable experience. I’m so happy to put this together, and to work with the writing program. I’m still trying to forget our medical trauma, and writing this book is helping me to untangle the knots in my stomach and my heart.”
